Could you use a winter getaway this year? Whether you found it tough to escape over the summer, or simply fancy some relaxing time off in the colder months, the best time to take a break is when you get the chance!
In actual fact, there are some big advantages to visiting Norfolk outside the peak season. Availability is great and you’ll have little problem booking your caravan pitch or lodge. You'll also get even better value for money, with some of the lowest prices of the year. Nor does everything go to sleep. Year-round attractions offer plenty of fun with no queues. Some activities are at their best in the winter and early spring too.
Here at Searles, we’re ideal for winter touring and self-catering breaks in Norfolk, as there are few days we’re not open. Our caravan pitches are available most weeks of the year, while special breaks in our holiday lets continue right through December and January with selected packages. Here are just some of the other top activities and reasons to visit Norfolk in the winter:
Peaceful Norfolk Beaches and Winter Wildlife
The soft side of Norfolk (Image: Visit Norfolk Facebook)
Ok, so it might not be t-shirt weather. But so many of our Norfolk beaches are just as beautiful in the winter. With fewer visitors, the local wildlife feels safer to come out too, making it the perfect time for activities like birdwatching and seal spotting.
Some of the best winter wildlife sites are very close to us here in Hunstanton in fact: Holme Dunes and RSPB Snettisham are perfect for a variety of species, while Holkham National Nature Reserve is just half an hour east.
Particular regional highlights include the pink-footed goose, drawn to Norfolk for the leftovers from the sugar beet crop, and swarms of Snettisham Waders, while the area also has some good spots to find seals. Our local Seal Rescue Centre is another place well worth a visit too, while you’ll also find further useful info at: https://www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk/
Year-Round Events and Live Entertainment
Of course, when it’s rather cold to spend the evening outdoors there is also the prospect of live entertainment. We host various weekenders and events here at Searles, whether your thing is Northern Soul, top tribute acts or Classic Darts with legendary players. Our special breaks section is always worth checking for the latest deals.
We can’t guarantee sunshine then, but we can guarantee that you’ll be royally entertained every winter! Should you want to discover other local entertainment in Huntstanton, there is also a great variety of shows for all ages and tastes at The Princess Theatre.
Classic Steam Train Rides in Norfolk
In terms of classic attractions, you won’t find all your favourites open right through the coldest months of the year. That said, there are some other specials that are only found in the off-season. One classic example of this is the North Norfolk Railway. Taking a steam train is great fun, not to mention a magical way to take in some beautiful frosty scenery. Wonderful Winter Fishing
Although many visitors come to Norfolk each summer to cast a line, the fair weather fishers risk missing out on some of the most exciting sport of the year. Winter pike fishing on the Norfolk Broads can be excellent, for example. We would recommend getting a guide for at least a day though, to help you find your way on these large waters and handle these deceptively fragile fish safely if you’re new to it.
Plenty of carp feature in our on-site lake, ideal for a spot of winter fishing.
As for general coarse fishing, smaller, well-stocked day ticket lakes are the most reliable way to get bites on the coldest days. We have a special on-site fishing lake here at Searles with stacks of roach, rudd, tench and carp present. You’ll get plenty of bites on simple float-fished maggots and a half day ticket is just a fiver!
