For anyone who has ever forgotten one of the holiday essentials, it can be a costly lesson. With a small item, it could set you back you a few pounds or Euros; with a larger item it could be a major headache. But in the hustle and bustle of holiday packing, things can easily get overlooked.
So without further ado, here is a list of things not to forget when packing for your next trip. We'll start with the very basics, but we've also included some beach essentials and even a list of things to do before you go away:
Holiday essentials packing list:
- Passport & driving license (even if you're not going abroad, have some ID for emergencies).
- House keys
- Wallet & any currency
- Tickets and travel documents
- Mobile phone (although you can always turn it off once you're there!)
- Chargers for any devices & travel adaptors
- Maps and guidebooks
- Toothbrush & toothpaste
- Toiletries (Deodorant, makeup, shampoo etc)
- Clothing (including socks and underwear for each day)
- Appropriate footwear (possibly walking boots or sandals/ flipflops)
- Any medication (including pain & indigestion relief)
- First aid basics, such as plasters & antiseptic cream (a portable first kit is an excellent investment)
- Anything you are unlikely to be able to buy where you're going (for most Brits that includes your favourite brand of tea!)
- The kids (unless they are really annoying you!). Only joking.
Small but useful bits and pieces...
It's not life or death if you forget these items, but the following are often very useful:
- Camera and charger
- Pen and paper
- Refillable water bottle
- A gift for your hosts or friends
- A long life shopping bag (also great for the beach or a picnic)
- Binoculars (so underrated for any beautiful or wild location!)
- Hand gel
- Travel games
- A good book or your Kindle device
Things to do before you go on Holiday
Not so much a list of bits and pieces to take, as things to take care of so you can relax and get into holiday mode:
- Turn the hot water/ heating system off
- Switch off electrical appliances
- close any windows that could pose a security risk
- Water the plants
- Tell neighbours or a friend you're off (if you ask nicely they might keep an eye on things)
- Arrange pet care
- Weigh your luggage (if flying)
Things to remember for a beach holiday or hot location
- Sunglasses
- Sun block
- Sun hats
- Beach towels
- Swimwear
- Ball or beach games
- Flip flops
- A large, waterproof bag for bits and pieces
- Cool bag & plenty to drink
- Camping chairs
- Umbrella or shelter (if it's extra hot!)
